City Girl, City Stories is 9!

31 October 2023 in DIARY

It’s been 9 years of blogging here! I always thought that at a certain point or by a certain number of years, there wouldn’t be much surprises when it comes to my blog anymore. I still love blogging, I do, but I wasn’t expecting surprises, you know? Turns out, this year of blogging have brought along with it some pretty joyful surprises and I’m here for it! :)

Just earlier this month, I had a short little live feature on national radio (it was pretty nerve-wracking haha!) on Singapore’s radio station CNA938 where I was introduced as the “Founder of citygirlcitystories.com” for a short lifestyle segment! That was such an honour and joy and a complete pinch me moment! To be honest with you, to this day, I never feel like I deserve the opportunities I have received via my blog, but every single one of these nine years, I remain grateful. :)

Other than my radio feature, another fun surprise was trying out a dating service, going on several first dates and sharing my experience and reflections on the whole thing – read all about it here! I’ve also received another exciting opportunity just a few days ago, which I cannot wait to share about soon!

In terms of blogging content, I am finally travelling to my other favourite city in the world, Hong Kong, and I’m so excited to share some new city adventures from Hong Kong! I have been away for six years – too long – and I have missed the city so much! (Fun fact: City Girl, City Stories started out as a Hong Kong lifestyle blog!)

Time really flies and I can’t believe it’s been nine years of blogging for me. What an absolute joy and privilege it has been! Along the way, I graduated from a postgraduate student to a working professional, moved cities from Hong Kong to Singapore, but I like to think that I’m still the same city girl with an ever present curiosity and love for the city life.

Thank you for following along on my city adventures and thank you for being here as I share about everything from Christmas, books, cafes, egg waffles to dating. It’s been an incredibly fun and rewarding ride and I always hope that my little blog might have sprinkled some inspiration for your city adventures, too. :)

Here’s to more stories ahead! For now, I’d love to reshare these nine posts from the blog archives, one each from the nine categories on my blog! :)

🏛️ Arts & Culture: Here’s a post on ArtScience Museum’s music and sound themed exhibition ‘Orchestral Manoeuvres’ from 2021, one of my favourite exhibitions!

📚 Books: A book recommendation from me, where I shared one of my favourite books about South Korea’s capital city, Seoul. :)

📖 Diary: I love to share annual Christmas in the city posts! Here’s one from Christmas in Singapore 2019!

🍽️ Eats: One of my personal favourite posts and also a very popular post on this blog, this one where I shared about the Hong Kong egg waffle!

🎟️ Events: I’ve been incredibly lucky to be invited to more events than I’m able to attend, but a personal favourite type of event I really enjoy is meet the author events! Here’s one where I met Lauren Ho, author of the hilarious novel ‘Last Tang Standing’ (see my post here!)

🌆 Explore: Here’s a post from my Hong Kong days, exploring Sai Kung in Hong Kong. :)

🎡 Fun: So much fun stuff over the years! Does anyone remember this Hello Kitty Supermarket in Hong Kong? It was the best! :)

🛍️ Shop: This is a recent post on the blog, but I must share again about Bommoi, a delightful bookshop & cafe in Singapore. :)

🌅 Travel / Staycation: As you can probably tell, I don’t travel much, so here’s a throwback staycation food diary from my wonderful stay at Marina Bay Sands!

☀️ A day in the life: out of office edition ☀️

I've been enjoying browsing "a day in the life" posts shared by others, so I thought I'll share one of my own. :) Here's a day I captured, when I was out of office a few weeks ago for a much needed break. 😌

🍳 Started the day at my neighbourhood Starbucks, eating a small breakfast and started on a bit of blogging again~

📚 Popped over to the bookstore @booksbeyond.borders to donate some books and browse more books & wonderful things!

🍽 📽Off to a buffet lunch! Stuffed myself happy, then dashed to the cinema @theprojectorsg to catch a screening of Angelina Jolie's <Maria>

🍵 Walked over to @baristartcoffee_sg inside another bookstore @bookxcess and had grand plans to read my book, but ended up contemplating my career instead. 😆

That's a day in my life (OOO edition), how do you spend yours?

Before we dive head first into 2025, my sister @wording_art and I spent a spontaneous few days in our (other) favourite city: Hong Kong! 🌟

After the craziness of 2024, this sister trip felt like a much needed reset. Thanks HK, for letting us live our best lives. 😄✨️

Some snapshots here, more to come~

2024 has been full of surprises so far! Mostly in great ways though. 😄 This year has also been one of my busiest ones in recent memory. ☁️

In other news, my blog citygirlcitystories.com that I started when I graduated from university turns 10 years old next week! 🥳 Ahh, where does the time go... 😶‍🌫️ Life's demands meant that I took an unexpected hiatus from my blog, but if you'll kindly hope with me, perhaps I could return to it soon! 🍀

(Compiled from three weekends haha, because I have long given up on sharing anything online "on time". 😆)
The first half of 2024 was tiring... in more ways The first half of 2024 was tiring... in more ways than one. Despite that, I had a hard stop in May to take time off, flew across the world and landed in London, a city that has been on my travel list for ages!! 🇬🇧

A week full of (mostly) British summer weather, incredible art and stunning museums, charming bookshops, the most beautiful libraries, scones and tea, I really enjoyed London! 😊💛

I hope to catch up with Instagram/blogging soon, which I completely fell off from, and there's stuff from Singapore/Hong Kong/London I'd love to share, but for now, here's two candid photos captured by @wording_art reflecting my happiness on this trip. :)

🌼 Looks like I'm doing a weird dance but was actually avoiding rain puddles at Kenwood House, one of my favourite places I visited!

🖼 Visited several of London's wonderful museums and this was at the National Portrait Gallery, where I got to see the famed "Portrait of Mai (Omai)" in person! 🤩 I was following this acquisition story in the news and was especially delighted when I heard that it was on display during my trip. :)

More soon and here's to the second half of 2024! ✨️🤞
Books are a huge passion in my life and for 2024, Books are a huge passion in my life and for 2024, I plan to try harder to bring more of my book recommendations to my blog! :) For my first rec this year, I'm excited to share "Dearest New York: A Love Letter to New York" by Deirdre Gartner @girlintheyellowtaxinyc 🚕

If you'd like to, I'd be delighted if you check out my review on citygirlcitystories.com As a bonus, I also have a Q&A with the author herself! 🤩

I'm actually a huge fan of the @girlintheyellowtaxinyc blog and Instagram, so I loved hearing from Deirdre about life in NYC and her experience being a native New Yorker. Do check out the full author interview on my blog! (link in bio) 🍎
