Exploring Singapore: Tanjong Pagar Railway Station

4 September 2016 in EXPLORE, SINGAPORE

Over the summer, I took a trip back to the other city I call home: sunny Singapore! This year, I was really happy to squeeze in quite a bit of exploring to several places for the first time. Watch this space, I’m looking forward to sharing more here! :)

To start, I have to share about the former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, which if you plan to visit, you got to do it soon as it’s only open till December this year.

I’m quite embarrassed to admit that I didn’t know much about the station (a national monument of Singapore since 2011) and its history, until I visited and then read up about it afterwards. The station was opened in 1932 and stopped operations in 2011, it used to be a station for trains travelling between Singapore and Malaysia. If you’re interested, you can read more about the station’s history and architecture <here>.

Just like the station that stopped operating, the clock does not work too, if you’re wondering.

This station may not appeal to everyone, especially for visitors who prefer the Marina Bay Sands/Sentosa/Orchard Road side of things. However, it was exactly this contrast of an old, no longer in use station in modern and new Singapore that made the place a very interesting spot to visit for me.

To be honest, throughout my 19 years spent growing up in Singapore, I never did much exploring. Isn’t it quite a common occurrence though? The idea even seems funny sometimes, to explore your hometown. But yet, after moving away and when returning for the annual visits, I return with a list of places I want to explore and visit. I start appreciating things I never used to notice, taken for granted as simply being part of everyday life. So cliche but so true! I shared this on my Instagram while I was in Singapore, but allow me to repost it here. :)

Visited the Tanjong Pagar railway station today – an old railway station that is no longer in use, an interesting contrast of a place in modern and new Singapore. ???? — It’s funny how it took being away from my hometown and coming back to it to explore it with a fresh perspective and new eyes. Five years ago, I couldn’t wait to leave, wanting so much to experience my birthplace Hong Kong, a city I never got to know. Now I’ve returned to a country that has changed (and also remained the same) and I understand what a privilege it is to be a part of both cities, which no matter what anyone says, are completely different places and which are both wonderful in their own right. ????????????????????

Anyway, I’m glad to have gotten the chance to visit this station before its closure (on 25 December 2016) due to construction of a new train station. It seems like the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station will be restored after construction is over and will reopen in year 2025. (More information here.)

Hi Kylene! It may not be an attractive tourist spot but for me, it deserves a visit because it is history and heritage. I love the facade, arches and the wooden train tracks. The paintings also deserve an attention. Not sure though, but a lot can be done to the ticketing area. There are surely a lot of artists and historians willing to collaborate.

Btw, thank you for referring me to postcrossing.com I will surely try it one of these days. :)

Hi Diane! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it’s always interesting to see things from a different perspective. :) Even though it’s quite some years away, I’m curious to see how the station building would look after the restoration, maybe the ticketing area will have a new look?

Oh you’re welcome, I hope you like it! :)

☀️ A day in the life: out of office edition ☀️

I've been enjoying browsing "a day in the life" posts shared by others, so I thought I'll share one of my own. :) Here's a day I captured, when I was out of office a few weeks ago for a much needed break. 😌

🍳 Started the day at my neighbourhood Starbucks, eating a small breakfast and started on a bit of blogging again~

📚 Popped over to the bookstore @booksbeyond.borders to donate some books and browse more books & wonderful things!

🍽 📽Off to a buffet lunch! Stuffed myself happy, then dashed to the cinema @theprojectorsg to catch a screening of Angelina Jolie's <Maria>

🍵 Walked over to @baristartcoffee_sg inside another bookstore @bookxcess and had grand plans to read my book, but ended up contemplating my career instead. 😆

That's a day in my life (OOO edition), how do you spend yours?

Before we dive head first into 2025, my sister @wording_art and I spent a spontaneous few days in our (other) favourite city: Hong Kong! 🌟

After the craziness of 2024, this sister trip felt like a much needed reset. Thanks HK, for letting us live our best lives. 😄✨️

Some snapshots here, more to come~

2024 has been full of surprises so far! Mostly in great ways though. 😄 This year has also been one of my busiest ones in recent memory. ☁️

In other news, my blog citygirlcitystories.com that I started when I graduated from university turns 10 years old next week! 🥳 Ahh, where does the time go... 😶‍🌫️ Life's demands meant that I took an unexpected hiatus from my blog, but if you'll kindly hope with me, perhaps I could return to it soon! 🍀

A week full of (mostly) British summer weather, incredible art and stunning museums, charming bookshops, the most beautiful libraries, scones and tea, I really enjoyed London! 😊💛

I hope to catch up with Instagram/blogging soon, which I completely fell off from, and there's stuff from Singapore/Hong Kong/London I'd love to share, but for now, here's two candid photos captured by @wording_art reflecting my happiness on this trip. :)

🌼 Looks like I'm doing a weird dance but was actually avoiding rain puddles at Kenwood House, one of my favourite places I visited!

🖼 Visited several of London's wonderful museums and this was at the National Portrait Gallery, where I got to see the famed "Portrait of Mai (Omai)" in person! 🤩 I was following this acquisition story in the news and was especially delighted when I heard that it was on display during my trip. :)

More soon and here's to the second half of 2024! ✨️🤞

If you'd like to, I'd be delighted if you check out my review on citygirlcitystories.com As a bonus, I also have a Q&A with the author herself! 🤩

I'm actually a huge fan of the @girlintheyellowtaxinyc blog and Instagram, so I loved hearing from Deirdre about life in NYC and her experience being a native New Yorker. Do check out the full author interview on my blog! (link in bio) 🍎
