Goodbye, Hong Kong

14 June 2017 in DIARY, HONG KONG

Here I am, approaching the end of what has been an amazingly special chapter in my life: living abroad in my birthplace Hong Kong for a total of six and a half years! This experience has changed, challenged and developed me and I am no longer quite the same person I was when I arrived. It has been without a doubt, the best thing that has ever happened to me so far. The experiences and memories I have from this city, I will always treasure.

City Girl City Stories: Light Rose Garden HK

I was raised in sunny and quiet Singapore, a small country in Southeast Asia, as a child of Hong Kong immigrants, spending my childhood and teenage years growing up there. Life then took a turn and led me to vibrant and indescribable Hong Kong, a small city in East Asia, where I spent six and a half years of my young adult life. Two wonderful Asian cities, that despite the constant comparisons and certain similarities, are as different as can be.

City Girl City Stories: Avenue of Stars Farewell

There is a constant flow of people coming in and out of Hong Kong, and even as I take my exit, I imagine the many new beginnings of others that will be taking place here. I remember mine clearly because it was my dream come true when I got the chance to come to Hong Kong. Everyone’s experience is different, so I only speak for myself. During my six and a half years here, I am proud to say that I have truly tried to the best of my ability, to immerse myself into life here and to try to understand and see Hong Kong for what it is. Both on its own terms and on the terms of the people who call this city home, locals and non-locals. It’s been eye opening.

City Girl City Stories: Ngong Ping 360

Hong Kong is not the easiest city to move to, and my early years here were very challenging but exciting. As I settled in, I explored the city and met new people, pursued my education and job opportunities, adopted homes, hangouts and neighbourhoods for myself – writing a brand new chapter in this city, all mine.

City Girl City Stories: Exploring Hong Kong PoHo

During my time living in Hong Kong, I did think that I would stay in Hong Kong for an extended period of time, but knew that my intention was not to settle down here permanently. It’s a little earlier than I expected, but it turns out that summer 2017 is going to be the end of this Hong Kong journey. I already know that I’m going to miss so much of this city, but despite that, I also want to look forward to starting my next chapter.

That next chapter is taking place in my first home: Singapore! I am moving to Singapore! The idea of starting again makes be both excited and a little jittery. I guess the big question is “why?”. Big decisions tend to come with many reasons behind them, don’t they? I’ll share the biggest one: I am moving to Singapore to pursue new career opportunities, in an industry that I am genuinely excited about!

As for City Girl, City Stories, this blog will stay as my hobby and journal and I will continue to update with new adventures as I explore Singapore. However much of your time you take out of your day to drop by here, thank you for reading as I shared my city stories in Hong Kong over the past few years. :)

City Girl City Stories: Light Rose Garden HK

With that said, Hong Kong will never be far from my mind and half my heart will always belong here. I’m very blessed to have found another home in this city and even though I am moving away, there will definitely be many future visits! I believe I have grown a lot during my time here, and will bring these experiences along with me as I embark on my next chapter. At the end of it all, Hong Kong has shown me that it is possible to explore a city you live in even after six and a half years. Hong Kong has taught me to always look up and around, to always see my city with eyes wide open. Hong Kong has taught me to take chances and try, to fail and to start again. Hong Kong has showed me that you never know what to expect, what is waiting at the next turn and what the next opportunity could be.

Thank you for everything Hong Kong, this city and the great people I have met and known will always be special to me. Now, it’s time for new beginnings and new stories to be written. See you soon, Singapore.

☀️ A day in the life: out of office edition ☀️

I've been enjoying browsing "a day in the life" posts shared by others, so I thought I'll share one of my own. :) Here's a day I captured, when I was out of office a few weeks ago for a much needed break. 😌

🍳 Started the day at my neighbourhood Starbucks, eating a small breakfast and started on a bit of blogging again~

📚 Popped over to the bookstore @booksbeyond.borders to donate some books and browse more books & wonderful things!

🍽 📽Off to a buffet lunch! Stuffed myself happy, then dashed to the cinema @theprojectorsg to catch a screening of Angelina Jolie's <Maria>

🍵 Walked over to @baristartcoffee_sg inside another bookstore @bookxcess and had grand plans to read my book, but ended up contemplating my career instead. 😆

That's a day in my life (OOO edition), how do you spend yours?

Before we dive head first into 2025, my sister @wording_art and I spent a spontaneous few days in our (other) favourite city: Hong Kong! 🌟

After the craziness of 2024, this sister trip felt like a much needed reset. Thanks HK, for letting us live our best lives. 😄✨️

Some snapshots here, more to come~

2024 has been full of surprises so far! Mostly in great ways though. 😄 This year has also been one of my busiest ones in recent memory. ☁️

In other news, my blog citygirlcitystories.com that I started when I graduated from university turns 10 years old next week! 🥳 Ahh, where does the time go... 😶‍🌫️ Life's demands meant that I took an unexpected hiatus from my blog, but if you'll kindly hope with me, perhaps I could return to it soon! 🍀

The first half of 2024 was tiring... in more ways The first half of 2024 was tiring... in more ways than one. Despite that, I had a hard stop in May to take time off, flew across the world and landed in London, a city that has been on my travel list for ages!! 🇬🇧

A week full of (mostly) British summer weather, incredible art and stunning museums, charming bookshops, the most beautiful libraries, scones and tea, I really enjoyed London! 😊💛

I hope to catch up with Instagram/blogging soon, which I completely fell off from, and there's stuff from Singapore/Hong Kong/London I'd love to share, but for now, here's two candid photos captured by @wording_art reflecting my happiness on this trip. :)

🌼 Looks like I'm doing a weird dance but was actually avoiding rain puddles at Kenwood House, one of my favourite places I visited!

🖼 Visited several of London's wonderful museums and this was at the National Portrait Gallery, where I got to see the famed "Portrait of Mai (Omai)" in person! 🤩 I was following this acquisition story in the news and was especially delighted when I heard that it was on display during my trip. :)

More soon and here's to the second half of 2024! ✨️🤞
Books are a huge passion in my life and for 2024, Books are a huge passion in my life and for 2024, I plan to try harder to bring more of my book recommendations to my blog! :) For my first rec this year, I'm excited to share "Dearest New York: A Love Letter to New York" by Deirdre Gartner @girlintheyellowtaxinyc 🚕

If you'd like to, I'd be delighted if you check out my review on citygirlcitystories.com As a bonus, I also have a Q&A with the author herself! 🤩

I'm actually a huge fan of the @girlintheyellowtaxinyc blog and Instagram, so I loved hearing from Deirdre about life in NYC and her experience being a native New Yorker. Do check out the full author interview on my blog! (link in bio) 🍎
